Which genders are dominating the IT and Technology space in the Nordic region? It’s not immediately obvious, but recent insights from the 2024 IT & Tech Salary Report – Nordic Edition provide a look into gender roles in IT and Technology and their significance for businesses.
What is the IT & Tech gender split?
Taking a closer look at the data, it’s clear that the IT & Tech workforce isn’t as diverse as we’d hoped. According to our survey, men make up a whopping 77% of the industry, while women account for only 21%. There’s also a small but important presence of transgender individuals, at 1%, with another 1% preferring not to disclose their gender.
Why it matters for IT & Technology businesses
Understanding gender roles and who’s in the driver’s seat in IT & Tech isn’t just about numbers—it’s about understanding trends and implications for businesses.
Insights for Targeting
With a large proportion of the industry being male, businesses gain valuable insights into consumer behaviours and preferences. This knowledge helps tailor marketing strategies and product offerings to resonate better with male consumers, ultimately driving sales and loyalty.
Diversity breeds innovation
A diverse workforce brings fresh perspectives and ideas. Embracing gender diversity fosters a culture of innovation, allowing companies to stay agile and responsive to changing market dynamics—an area where IT and Technology often fall short.
While more companies are addressing the gender pay gap in IT and Technology, our report shows that even in 2024, more efforts are needed. It’s crucial not only to encourage more women to enter the field but also to make the industry a more welcoming and viable career option for them.
Promoting inclusivity
The lack of gender diversity in IT and Technology sends a clear message about inclusivity and representation. Without championing diversity, companies will struggle to attract top talent and connect with customers or clients who prioritise companies that embrace inclusivity and equality.
This is particularly important at the top levels of leadership. When women see other women in leadership positions, it inspires them to pursue similar paths, fostering a more inclusive and diverse industry.
